Acetate tow, or cellulose acetate tow, is a kind of man-made fiber which made up of cellulose and acetic anhydride under catalytic esterification in sulfuric acid. The structural formula can be expressed as: [(C6H7O2)(OOCCH3)x(OH)3-x]n. When x=2.4 it stand for cellulose acetate which actic acid content is 54.8%. Acetate tow is not easy to catch fire, so it can equally be used in a series of applications like cigarette filters and felt-tips as well as for the controlled release of substances such as air fresheners and perfume dispensers.
